Born in Barcelona in 1980, Abel Tomàs began his musical studies with his father and violin with Joan Tomàs. Later he was a Zakhar Bron and Sergei Fatkouline’s student at the Reina Sofía School of Music and a Viktor Tretjakov’s pupil at the Hochschule für Musik Köln.  His chamber formation has been deeply influenced by the masters Walter Levin, Rainer Schmidt and György Kurtág.

Abel Tomàs was awarded in several national and international competitions in Spain and Argentina. As a soloist, he has performed with several orchestras, including the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Vallès Symphony, the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and directors such as James Judd, Junichi Hirokami, Victor Pablo Perez, Carlo Rizzi, Rubén Gimeno and Zubin Mehta. He has performed numerous violin and piano recitals with the pianists Orli Shaham, Miri Yampolsky, Amir Katz, Eldar Nebolsin, Kennedy Moretti and Hyo-Sun-Lim. He has also collaborated with musicians such as Gérard Caussé, Marta Gulyas, Subguru Ito and Alexander Melnikov in chamber music concerts.

At the age of 16 he joined the internationally renowned Cuarteto Casals, a chamber ensemble with whom he maintains a very intense artistic activity with concerts in the best European theatres and tours in Latin America, the United States and Japan. Since 2004 the quartet has recorded exclusively for the label Harmonia Mundi, a record company with which they have made 12 recordings thus far. The quartet has been awarded the National Music Prize 2006, the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2005 and the Premi Nacional de Catalunya 2016.

Since 2009, together with his brother Arnau Tomàs and the pianist Hyo-Sun-Lim, Abel Tomàs is a founding member of the Ludwig Trio. With this group he has recorded two CDs, one with  Beethoven’s Trios and the other with Beethoven's Triple Concerto together with the Galician Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Víctor Pablo Pérez.

Apart from his concert activity, Abel Tomàs teaches chamber music at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona, has been a guest chamber music professor at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and participates in several courses and masterclasses both in Europe and in the United States.
